Shahzia Sikander
Shahzia Sikander is a Pakistani artist who works in drawing, painting, animation, large-scale installation, performance and video, on an international stage. She blurs lines on traditional and contemporary as well as representation and abstraction. She has work displayed all across the globe, including several site-specific installations.
"I think context, location matters a lot. Because location obviously in my situation, it's the space in which the work is going to be exhibited. And since some of the work I do is created onsite, it requires a different type of space, versus the smaller drawings or more subject-oriented work. So that the context becomes important."

Lesson Connection
A lesson that connects to Shahzia Sikander's body of work could be one that considers the location and space in which an artwork is displayed in. The student would choose a location that they would like to create a meaningful piece of artwork. Then, they would determine how the space they have chosen would affect the meaning, and then create a statement based upon the way that the location alter or influence the artwork.
