Big Idea Reflection:
Expressing Personal Experience and Ideologies Through Fantasy and Surreal Artwork.
Over time, I have begun to notice much of my artwork is about myself, my personal experiences, or the opinions and ideologies I have about the world around me. I express these thoughts through artwork that often falls under surrealist or fantasy work. Here I have selected a few of my pieces that reflect my big idea.

My progression as an artist:
an autobiography
an autobiography
As an artist, I believe that my life experiences have greatly influenced my artwork. I was born in southern Minnesota, and grew up with my two brothers. As a child I had a form of kidney cancer, and went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. However, I was only a year old at the time and have no recollection of the original event, just some of the following doctor’s appointments later in life. Just before I
turned 5 I moved to Illinois. Once I moved to Illinois I moved several different places, nearing twenty individual moves. Over the years my family has separated and we all live in different areas, most have returned to Minnesota. Throughout my life I have considered myself an introvert. I have always enjoyed art.
My interest in art began very young. As far as my memory goes I remember drawing. As a child I drew images of things that I liked; such as cats, and fairies nearing adolescence. When I reached my teenage years I took art as an elective in middle school and joined the art club, where my skills were developed further. When I hit high school I became much more introverted and depressed, and I only enjoyed my art classes. As a freshman in high school I did very poorly, and decided not to return to public school the following year. Instead, I homeschooled myself through a private program. Since I had much time alone I had a lot of time to research my primary interest at the time: art. I spent a lot of time looking and analyzing artwork I had found online or in books. Much of this opened time was also used to create art. My third year of highschool I returned to public school. I chose many art electives, drawing, sculpture, and photography. This kept me interested in schooling and I was able to graduate with the rest of my classmates my senior year. I was accepted and enrolled to NIU as a freshman and am currently pursuing a career in art education.
I’ve never just be interested in concentrating my art in one medium or idea. I enjoy learning, and learning how to use different materials. There is enjoyment and satisfaction in the struggle, for me, as an artist. However, I do have some primary categories that my art often falls into, such as drawing, painting and sculptural work. I also have some experience creating digital art, graphic design, photography, performance art and ceramics to name a few. The concepts of my artwork often derive from myself. The general ideas of my art can stem from my self identity, my inspirations, my struggles, and my own personal experiences. I am constantly learning about myself and the world around me and that is reflected in my artwork.
