Description and Interpretation:
Faith Ringgold is an early female African American artist. Being exactly that, she has allowed her identity to direct her art making and became her own inspiration in her work. While becoming an artist she was often told she wouldn’t be able to do many of the things she wanted, but this only pushed her to want to accomplish her dreams more, and so she went out into the art world and made herself a reputable individual.
Use in Teaching:
If I were to use Faith Ringgold in my classroom or in a lesson I would show and explain her story to help teach the children that anything is possible, as long as you want it and try hard enough. I think that’s what this particular quilt is about, also. I could also use her story and her work to help explain a way to the students how you can use yourself, your history, or your culture as an inspiration in their own artwork, and possibly help trigger ideas to come up with great themes that are important to the students and relates to them.
